What Freedom Means to Me – Qué Significado Tiene la Libertad para Mí

I am a citizen representing two nations and proud of my affiliation with both. My country of residence, the United States of America, celebrates Independence Day on July 4th and my country of birth, Argentina, celebrates Independence Day on July 9th. In both countries, Independence Day is a day to reflect on the freedom we have and what it took to acquire that.

The word “freedom” resonates within me, almost as much as the meaning of the word “mother”. Freedom is inherent to every human, regardless of their gender or country of origin, and yet, freedom could be taken away if we are not alert enough and if we do not respect its valuable meaning.

My generation grew up in Argentina where freedom was removed. Our freedom of speech, to assemble, and to express ourselves was non-existent. Although denounced to the world by other countries, we didn’t realize or understand what was really happening within our own land. Some of my family members mysteriously disappeared from their homes during those days. Some of them returned, others never came back, remaining “desaparecidos” or “the disappeared”.

35 years after leaving, I was able to vote for the very first time in an Argentinian election. This, to me, symbolizes a type of freedom that I had never witnessed before.

Argentina continues to search for its place in the world. However, the people recovered the most valuable gift that was once stolen from them – their freedom. Now, I have the opportunity to visit my home country, often for work and also to visit my elderly father and family. When I am there, I walk the same streets that I saw as a child. Every corner displays a plaque, which lists the names of the people who disappeared – “Los desaparecidos” – during the dark times of the military junta. I make a point to read each name so they will not be forgotten. This helps me to understand what I could not as a child – that human life should be respected and cared for, regardless of religion, race, gender, belief, or country of origin. Freedom is the most valuable gift we could ever have. Let’s treasure it.

Soy ciudadana de dos piases y orgullosa de pertenecer a ambos. El país en el que resido, el estado unido de américa celebra el día de su independencia el 4 de julio y el país que me vio nacer, Argentina, celebra su independencia el 9 de julio. En ambos países, el día de la independencia es un día para reflexionar en la libertad que poseemos y lo que eso significa.

La palabra Libertad tiene un sentido muy especial para mí, tanto como la palabra: “Madre”.  La libertad es inherente a todo ser humano, sin distinción de género, país de origen, raza o religión; y aún así, puede ser arrebatada si no estamos alertas o si no respetamos el verdadero significado de ella.

Mi generación, creció en Argentina en un tiempo en que la libertad no existía: libertad de expresión, de asamblea, eran ignoradas. Aunque otros países denunciaron estos arrebatos, en Argentina no nos dábamos cuenta de lo que estaba sucediendo. Miembros de mi propia familia fueron tomados de sus hogares por la fuerza; algunos retornaron pero otros nunca volvieron. Ellos formaron parte de “Los Desaparecidos”.

35 años después, por primera vez, pude votar en una elección en Argentina, y fui testigo de un derecho y ejercicio de una libertad que nunca antes había vivido en mi país de origen.

A pesar de que Argentina todavía está tratando de encontrar su lugar en el mundo, el pueblo argentino recuperó el tesoro más valioso: su libertad. Hoy en día, tengo la oportunidad de regresar a Argentina por razones de trabajo, también para visitar a mi padre ya mayor y a mi familia. Cada vez que vuelvo, y piso las veredas que un día me vieron crecer, hago hincapié en detenerme virtualmente en cada esquina donde se ha colocado una placa con los nombres de las personas que un día desaparecieron bajo el poder de la junta militar gobernante. Hago esto para que ellos no sean olvidados. Esto me ayuda a entender lo que antes, cuando vivía en Argentina, no llegué a comprender: Que la vida humana debe ser respetada sin importar raza, género, religión u origen; que la libertad es el regalo más valioso que podamos jamás tener. ¡Debemos cuidarla siempre!
